Armenia Flower Adoration Day

The blossoms of spring are often the echoes of the yearning in the hearts of young woman for their beloved ones. Adoration of Flowers Day is called Hambardzum in Armenia and was historically celebrated in the open fields. That was the only day when young people were allowed to go out and date in middle age Armenia. This year it will be celebrated on May 1.

Many traditions associated with Hambardzum, nowadays can be observed in the villages of Armenia. Peasants will also tell about rituals. The day before Hambardzoom (on Wednesday), girls would go out to the fields to collect flowers and make bouquets. The biggest bouquet look like cross is called “Mother Flower”. That night women throw their belongings into a vase full of water. The vase and bouquets were kept safe throughout the night from the boys. According to legend that was the night for miracles. At midnight waters would rise and stand, the earth and the skies would embrace. The stars would kiss each other. The fortune-telling vase was placed under the stars to catch the influence of “secret forces” and all predictions made on this day become true.
